Infrastructure Design and Engineering Across a 300-Acre Private Ranch

The scope included water systems, barns, roads, residential infrastructure, and water features designed and built in coordination with the valley’s leading landscape architects. One of our main goals was fire suppression, which included flow and pressure modeling. In addition, we provided the land-use application, septic design, and observation/quality control of the construction efforts. Long-term partnerships are where Roaring Fork Engineering does some of its most comprehensive work. Over approximately ten years, RFE served as the civil engineer of record for the buildout of Deadwood Ranch, an expansive property in the Roaring Fork Valley that evolved from an initial water system project into a full infrastructure program supporting the ranch’s residential, operational, and amenity components.

Challenges & highlights

The project scope grew organically as the property developed. What began as a water system engagement expanded to include barn infrastructure, housing for the ranch manager, roads and access, and ultimately the primary residence. Throughout that process, RFE maintained continuity of design and coordination, ensuring that systems installed at different phases integrated cleanly as the program grew.

Water features were a defining element of the site’s character. Working closely with Design Workshop, one of the Roaring Fork Valley’s premier landscape architecture and planning firms, RFE designed and engineered a series of interconnected water features, recirculation systems, and ponds that contribute to the property’s aesthetic while meeting applicable Pitkin County code requirements. The work required careful coordination around drainage, grading, and the operational requirements of a functional ranch property.

Throughout the project, RFE coordinated with the ranch’s ownership, landscape architects, and county permitting officials to ensure each phase of work met both technical requirements and the high design standards the property demanded.

The results

Deadwood Ranch represents what a sustained client relationship can produce: infrastructure that was planned thoughtfully, built to last, and adapted over time to serve the evolving needs of the property. The water systems, roads, drainage, and site features all function as intended. The site’s amenities reflect a level of craft and coordination that comes from working closely with ownership and the design team over many years.
